BABATUNDE BAPTIST AKINREMI COKER

 He started school at St. Savior’s School Ikoyi Lagos, and from there went to St. Gregory’s College Obalende Lagos, he later attended the University of Lagos between September 1980 and June 1983, where he was awarded a B.A. (Hons) degree in philosophy. He served the mandatory one year National Youth Service in Rivers State between August 1983 and July 1984, and then he proceeded to study Law at the University of Lagos between 1984 and 1987, where he was awarded an LL.B (Hons) degree in Law and was the best overall student in the Law of Conveyancing.

He was in the Nigerian Law School between 1987 and 1988 and was called to the Nigerian Bar. He practiced for seven years in the Chambers of H.A. Lardner SAN where he rose from pupil to become the head of chambers. While there, he appeared in the High Courts of various States in Nigeria and handled several appeals in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. He has handled several trials and landmark cases involving Banking, Land Matters, Constitutional Matters, Shipping and Admiralty matters as well as doing solicitors work, legal drafting, mortgages, lease agreements and other secured credit transactions and international contract negotiations. He is a member of the International Bar Association, the Nigerian South African Chambers of Commerce, the Sino Nigerian Business Networking Group has worked on some of the Committees.

  1. COKER & ADELUOLA FIRM’S SERVICES

Mr. Babatunde Coker and Mr. Kayode Adeluola set up the firm of Coker & Adeluola in July 1995.

The Law Firm’s scope of operations involves litigation, Land transactions, commercial practice which includes the business angle to Estate financing and development and solicitor’s work. Legal support in contract negotiation with Clients and subcontractors, providing available market intelligence with regard to real property, and leasing and following up with appropriate Government agencies towards perfection of matters. Preparation of employment contracts and performance bonds. Advise on tax matters especially withholding tax. Advising Clients and assisting in obtaining Import Licenses and the relevant Law with regard to customs clearance and obtaining Soncap certificate for importation into Nigeria and providing regular information on developments related to intellectual property rights and the Law related thereto.

  • LITIGATION

The partners have at various times handled very contentious litigation in the High Courts (trials courts), the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court and the law reports in Nigeria are replete with the cases handled by the partners. Presently in these Chambers, we are handling very sensitive cases some of them involving National and International Interests.

We have handled in the Federal High Court and Supreme Court a matter involving the Insurance of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation’s assets valued at 25 billion United States Dollars.

Also as a law firm we are currently representing the interests of a client (name withheld) in a major shipping matter in the Federal High Court for damage done to our client’s vessel in Nigerian waters.

We have on numerous occasions represented the P&I Club of the international maritime industry when claims affecting members of the club here in Nigeria, arose.

  • SOLICITOR’S WORK/COMMERCIAL PRACTICE

Our Chambers regularly writes opinions on the present state of the Nigerian Law for foreign Law firms and corporations in the United Kingdom and other commonwealth countries for use in commercial practice and litigation. The Partners of the firm have recently concluded a Legal research and detailed for one of the European Union countries Embassy for purpose of their official Country Report on Nigeria. We also provide legal assistance on the interpretation of and compliance with Laws of the Federation covering Company Law practice and procedure, regulations governing imports and exports and other commercial related transactions in general. A wide range of documentation including Debenture and Mortgage Deeds, Memoranda, Joint Venture Agreements, Building Contracts Assignments, Leases and other secured credit transactions, undertaking the purchase and perfection of real property and chattel and perfection of same and the drawing up of wills are common features of our legal practice.

Our firm has a Department devoted to Legal research and training in matters related to Land and Property Ownership Transfers Acquisition. We have on numerous occasions advised Government and Property Development Corporations. Our services are regularly retained by Land owning families, Estate Development Companies and private individuals who desire to sell or purchase property.

We have also put together materials on the proposed annual workshop on Aviation Law and Insurance, to enlighten Legal Practitioners Administrators and Airline users of their rights and possible liabilities.

  • Advising on and arranging for processing of relevant applications to ensure compliance with relevant immigration statutes, and other formalities required to regularise the status of visiting and resident expatriate personnel.
  • Handling arbitration proceedings resulting from disputes in general between our clients and third parties.
  • Handling insolvency and formal winding up proceedings for major Multinational corporations.
